How to Prepare Your Motorcycle and Yourself for a Safe Riding Season

As the desert sun begins to warm the asphalt and the winds through Red Rock Canyon lose their winter bite, every rider in Nevada feels that familiar itch. It’s time to pull the cover off the bike and head back out onto the open road.

However, after a few months of inactivity, neither you nor your machine is at peak performance. Preparation isn’t just a chore—it’s the foundation of your safety. Here is how to ensure your first ride of the year isn’t your last.

Defining the Nevada Riding Season

In many parts of the country, "riding season" is strictly limited to the summer. In Nevada, it’s a bit different. While we enjoy a primary season from March through October, many of us ride year-round. However, the official "start" of the season is marked by the transition from the freezing nights of winter to the consistent daytime warmth of spring. This is when traffic increases and road conditions change, making it the most critical time for a safety reset.

T-CLOCS: The Pre-Ride Checklist

Before you thumb the starter, perform a thorough inspection. Use the T-CLOCS method recommended by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation:

  • Tires & Wheels: Check for dry rot or "flat spots" from sitting. Ensure your PSI is exactly where it needs to be.
  • Controls: Test your throttle, clutch, and brakes. Are the cables frayed? Is the lever firm?
  • Lights & Electrics: Ensure your headlamp, turn signals, and brake lights are visible, especially under the bright Nevada sun.
  • Oil & Fluids: Check levels and look for leaks on the garage floor. If your oil sat all winter, consider a fresh change.
  • Chassis & Stands: Inspect the chain tension and ensure the kickstand snaps back into place.

Sharpening Your Mental Gears

Your motorcycle isn’t the only thing that gets "rusty" over the winter. Your muscle memory and situational awareness need a tune-up, too.

Start with a low-stakes ride in a quiet neighborhood or a large parking lot. Practice your emergency braking and low-speed U-turns. Remember, Nevada drivers may have "forgotten" how to share the road with bikes over the winter months. Ride defensively, keep your following distances wide, and always have an escape route planned.

Gear Up for the Elements

Nevada’s climate is beautiful but unforgiving. Ensure your helmet is free of cracks and your visor is clear of scuffs that could cause glare. As the temperatures rise, dehydration becomes a silent enemy. Staying hydrated and wearing ventilated, CE-rated armor will keep you focused and protected against both the pavement and the heat.

We Have Your Back

We want every rider to enjoy the freedom of the Silver State without incident. But we also know that even the most prepared rider can face a "left-turn" situation or a distracted driver. If the unthinkable happens and you get into a motorcycle accident, you don't have to navigate the recovery process alone. At Burris & Thomas, LLC, we are lifelong advocates for the riding community. We provide the assertive legal protection you deserve so you can focus on healing and getting back on two wheels.
